Enterocolitis is an inflammation of the digestive tract, involving enteritis of the small intestine and colitis of the colon. It may be caused by various infections, with bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, or other causes. Enteritis is inflammation of the small intestine. Colitis is inflammation of the colon. Combined, the two conditions are called enterocolitis or coloenteritis. The disorder specifically affects the inner linings on both the small intestine and the colon, causing a number of symptoms in the body. Treatment for enterocolitis may include having fluids applied intravenously, or blood transfusions. In serious cases, surgery may be required.
